Fernando Mendoza’s remarkable season at the helm of the nation’s top-ranked team was rewarded with college football’s most coveted individual award on Saturday.
The Indiana Hoosiers quarterback won the 2025 Heisman Trophy, beating out Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin, Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love, and Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, to become the school’s first winner of the acclaimed prize.
As his name was called, an emotional Mendoza embraced his fellow finalists and his family. Holding back tears, he also hugged his IU head coach, Curt Cignetti.
“I’m at a loss of words. Thank you to everybody. First, I want to thank God for giving me the opportunity to chase a dream that once felt a world away,” Mendoza said while next to the trophy. “Standing here tonight and holding this bad boy, representing Indiana University, still doesn’t feel real.”

Indiana is into the final-4. No not the basketball March Madness final four, it is the NCAA football championship tournament which the Hoosiers are playing.
THE INDIANA HOOSIERS are having a remarkable run this college football season. They went 13-0 in the regular season, staking their claim as the only undefeated team headed into the College Football Playoff.
Indiana kicked off the postseason by taking home the Big Ten championship versus Ohio State. They went on to defeat Alabama 38-3 in the Rose Bowl. The Hoosiers will next face Oregon in the College Football Playoff semifinal on Jan. 9. To cap their streak of success, their quarterback, Fernando Mendoza, also became the first Hoosier to win the Heisman Trophy.

Winning the NCAA Heisman Trophy is a great accomplishment. Fernando Mendoza is a well deserving recipient. Praise worthy he remains. However, winning such a prestigious award brings a massive amount of hype and prediction. Nobody knows the future for certain, accept God almighty.
As far as I know, God hasn’t told anyone what lies ahead for young Fernando regarding his athletic career. Nonetheless, many prognostications and predictions are being set forth as they are written in stone. I can’t read stones.
The point is, as a fan I am all in, but as a sports memorabilia collector, I am just not sure I would stick my entire foot into the water just yet.
Within minutes of winning the Heisman, Fernando got NIL-ed into another realm of sports memorabilia marketing. The Donruss Sports Trading Card Company, was showing Fernando the upcoming release card images and playing the demonstration as a broadcast on X-account (Twitter) video, blasting the cards they were ‘now’ in the process of producing. Not the cards they had already produced.
Only a very limited amount of collectible cards on Fernando Mendoza have been produced prior to last weekend Heisman events. But now the boom is loud and fast.

I hope it all comes true. I am just not ready to invest in it, yet. College football is not the NFL.
